Stone Mountain Recieves Prestigious Environmental Leaders in Golf Award
Award Recognizes Golf Course Superintendents And Golf Courses Worldwide For Their Commitment To Environmental Stewardship; Stone Mountain, Led By Superintendent Anthony Williams, Receives Top Honor Overall And National Public Award
Orlando, Fla. - January 18, 2007 - Stone Mountain Golf Club, a Marriott Golf managed property, and home to two of Georgia's leading golf courses, today announced that it has been recognized as the overall winner of the prestigious Golf Course Superintendent's Association of America (GCSAA)/ Golf Digest's Environmental Leaders in Golf Awards (ELGA.) ELGA recognizes golf courses and superintendents worldwide for their commitment to environmental stewardship. Led by Golf Course Superintendent Anthony Williams, Stone Mountain also received top honors in the National Public category.
Williams is the only superintendent to receive this award twice, and in consecutive years, as previous recipients are not eligible for nomination unless they have changed facilities. In 2005, during his time at Renaissance PineIsle Resort & Golf Club, a former Marriott Golf managed property in Sugar Hill, GA, Williams won the ELGA in the National Resort category.
"I am thrilled to be receiving the ELGA for the second year in a row, this year on behalf of Stone Mountain Golf Club," said Anthony Williams, Golf Course Superintendent, Stone Mountain Golf Club. "It is truly an honor to be recognized for my passionate commitment to the protection and preservation of the environment and the role that this plays within the golf industry."
In his continuing dedication to environmental causes, Williams has also certified Stone Mountain as an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary, a program that helps golf courses protect the environment by enhancing the valuable natural areas and wildlife habitats that golf courses provide, while also improving efficiency and minimizing potentially harmful impacts of golf operations. Further, under William's guidance, Evergreen Marriott Conference Resort has become an Audubon Certified Cooperative Sanctuary, one of only 3 business properties in Georgia, and one of only 55 in the world, that are certified.
